How to Avoid People You Don’t Want to Talk To

When you’re having a bad day, you don’t typically want to talk to people at all.

Make sure the place you are is acceptable. If you mind what the people around you actually think about you, then this may not be the perfect place to do this. This technique involves being carefree about how others perceive you. It’s best to either be alone with this person while trying this or with a group of your friends.

Stand your ground. Make sure that where you are standing is free from distractions. Interruptions will completely ruin this avoiding technique. For example, if people are running around near you and have the possibility of bumping into you, this technique will be difficult to carry out.

Lock eyes with your undesired company. This lets them know you mean business. Do not look at anyone or anything else in the area. Be completely focused in on this person.

Do not speak to anyone. Don’t talk to your friends, the person trying to talk to you or anyone else. Be completely silent the entire time. If you speak, they may think you’ll eventually give in an talk to them.

Make the ugliest face you possibly can. You may want to practice this in a mirror before trying this technique. For some, it will take more work than for others to make this face. The idea is to let this person know that they wouldn’t enjoy talking to you even if you weren’t making this face by looking unpleasant.

Do not laugh or smile. Laughing or smiling while trying to do this will completely ruin everything. If you laugh or smile, the person trying to talk to you will think you were just joking when you made your unpleasant face. This may make them enjoy talking to you even more, which is the last thing you want.

Keep this face going until your annoying company leaves. If you can make this face without breaking it, the person talking to you will eventually leave you alone. The more persistent your company is, the longer you have to make this face. You are also able to determine how much the person wants to talk to you. The longer they tolerate you making this face, the more desperate they are to talk to you. If they tolerate your ugly face for over 2 minutes, what they have to say may be urgent, and you may want to consider listening and responding to them.

If the topic was not urgent, and your company has left, carry on doing what you were doing before. When the person you were avoided leaves, you should stop making the face immediately. Whether you were just hanging out, or dancing with friends, once you get this annoying person off your back, you are free to do what you want again. If this technique works for you, which it more than likely always will, you can use it for virtually an occasion; school, parties, family gatherings, etc.
